NYC Higher Ed ARS Event Gets Great Response

On Nov. 13, 2009, St. John's University hosted a Turning Technologies-sponsored lunch-and-learn session for New York City area users. Many thanks to Sharon See of St. John's Clinical Pharmacy Practice Department for her hard work in arranging some creative and informative faculty presentations that showcased different ways to incorporate audience response technology with instruction.

After showing how she rolled out ARS in her department, Sharon gave some great tips for helping new users incorporate ARS into their instruction. Following Sharon, Nikki Maisch showed how she uses ARS for attendance and quizzing, and discussed options for registering students into Participant Lists.

Candace Smith, the Clinical Pharmacy Practice Chair, gave a presentation showing how she incorporates ARS with a patient simulator (SimMan®). This was a highlight for many allied health and medical faculty in attendance, and has already generated interested from others wishing to adapt their own curricula in a similar way.

After Candace's presentation, Manouchkathe Cassagnol showed how she uses ARS to drive a Jeopardy-inspired "Stumpers" game that tests students' knowledge in a variety of categories.

While the rain kept a few attendees away, we still had more than 50 people in attendance from at least 18 NYC-area colleges and universities. The group ranged from advanced ARS users to beginners exploring options for incorporating the technology with instruction.

Congratulations to Doriann Hyland from The College of Staten Island, who won a 30-seat RF-LCD kit for her campus!

Many thanks to everyone who attended. And a special thanks to Sharon See and the team from St. John's Clinical Pharmacy Practice for putting together such a successful event. I hope this will be the first of many opportunities for Turning Technologies users in the area to communicate, collaborate and connect in person.

Check back here for more information from this event, as we report out about ARS use,  potential challenges and tips for overcoming them, suggestions for garnering buy-in from your colleagues and more. We had a productive discussion in the afternoon; I'll share the results here after we sort through the data.
